Musician, Programmer, Entrepreneur, TED Speaker, and Author, Derek Sivers (“The Person You Want to Be” – Ep. 30)

Multi-faceted, and multi-fascinating human, Derek Sivers

“…if you keep experiencing the same things, your mind keeps its same patterns…If you don’t flex, you lose your flexibility. You really only learn when you’re surprised…So to get smarter, you need to get surprised, think in new ways, and deeply understand different perspectives.”

(from Derek’s book, Hell Yeah or No)

Derek Sivers – as I describe him in my introduction for this podcast episode – is a deep thinker, a restless explorer, a prolific creator, and an active lifelong learner.

He has reinvented himself many times over: musician, circus ringleader/MC, computer programmer, entrepreneur, TED speaker, resident of numerous cities and countries around the world, and author of books that are both philosophical and filled with highly pragmatic advice.

In this conversation, we cover a lot of ground: how to get luckier, the importance of environment, the worst day of Derek’s life, becoming more self-aware through the practice of journaling, and much more.

Derek is my kind of human: thoughtful, generous, self-reflective, brimming with intelligence and enthusiasm, a pursuer of his own dreams and an encourager of others pursuing theirs, and a living reminder that there are other ways of doing things than those we are simply accustomed to or conditioned for.

It was a tremendous joy, honor, and privilege to get to spend a couple of hours interviewing him for The Person You Want to Be.

Please do yourself a favor, and check out Derek’s books, which are available for purchase in multiple formats on his website:
